At the beginning of the year, a lot of us make new year’s resolutions. We tell ourselves: this year, I’ll do blank. And… most of us give up or just forget about it by the time Valentine’s Day comes along. Well, we think 2018 can be different! Why not make this year the year you meet and exceed your goals?
There’s a lot of media attention on losing weight, looking great, and feeling awesome in just a few short weeks. But most of that, we think, is just false advertising. If you want to shed some pounds and start having more energy, you don’t need to follow the latest fad diet. You need a lifestyle makeover. Developing a healthy lifestyle is all you really need!
The best part? You can make this a family activity. Don’t let those flashy magazines trick you into thinking that only women of a certain age care about their health. Not only do young girls get bombarded with conceptions of the perfect body, but so do men and boys! That’s why we recommend getting together, as a family, to figure out how you can all feel better, physically and mentally.
In fact, studies have shown that if children or young teens develop a healthy lifestyle early in life, s/he is more likely to maintain that lifestyle over their lifetime. The study, conducted by Health Canada, showed that just getting active 2-3 times per week is usually enough to get them hooked for life. This can mean anything from dancing, cheering (our fave), walking/running, swimming, yoga – you name it! As long as the heart gets pumping, endorphins start rushing, and a taste for regular exercise gets developed.
So this January, we encourage every family to get together and get healthy!
Step One: Make a Plan
Before school and work starts getting crazy again, sit down together as a family to formulate a game plan. Are the people in your household already active? Or do they need to get started? Figure out what everyone’s needs are and come up with something that everyone will enjoy. Bonus points if you can come up with one weekly activity for the whole gang.
Step Two: Clean Out the Fridge (and Cupboards)
If eating healthy hasn’t been on your family’s radar, you might want to do a little cleaning. A little junk food every now and then won’t hurt, but if that’s all you got to keep hunger at bay between meals, getting healthy will be a challenge. Take out the really bad stuff – you know what they are!
Step Three: Go Shopping
Make a trip to the grocery store and pick out some healthy snacks and alternatives. Celery and peanut butter beats a Reese’s cup binge, popped chips is way better for you than traditional fried chips, and sugar-free beverages should be chosen over pop. Little adjustments like this will get you on the right track and will help keep you on the right track – too much all at once and you’ll want to give up.
Step Four: Get Active
Remember that game plan you came up with? Well, get to it! Stick it on a wall or the fridge – wherever you or the family will most likely see it. This way, you’ll be reminded regularly. The most important part of this lifestyle makeover is to get active! It’s easy to make excuses and avoid exercising, but it’s a lot more rewarding to get your heart pumping.
People who start a new exercise regime often report feeling more energized than before, happier and better prepared to deal with stress, and less inclined to indulge in junk food. So, don’t just sit there – get out and work out!
